Colorado Stem Cell Centers was founded in 2016 with the mission to provide non-surgical, medical treatments to athletes and adults who suffer from acute or chronic pain as the result of an injury or a medical condition. We rely on the natural healing power of stem cells to treat pain at its source. Our patient philosophy focuses on providing customized treatments within a compassionate, respectful and comfortable environment. Our goal is to eliminate pain and get you back to doing what you love.
Colorado Stem Cell Centers harnesses the natural healing power of undifferentiated, mesenchymal stem cells to repair damaged cartilage, ligaments, tendons or tissues in the body back to a healthier, less painful or painless state. We treat chronic pain in the neck, back, arm, hip and leg using minimally invasive techniques that include stem cell injections and platelet rich plasma injections.
What Injuries & Conditions Do We Treat?
Our breadth of expertise and experience allows us to address any number of musculoskeletal areas that have seen injury or chronic pain. This includes all the major and minor joints (shoulder, wrist, elbow, hip, knee, ankle, foot), the spine, and also soft tissue injuries.
We typically recommend A2M and PRP injections with muscle and tendon injuries. Tendonitis of the elbow, foot, hand and wrist. Epicondylitis (tennis elbow) is a common ailment treated with A2M and PRP. Multiple corticosteroid (cortisone) steroid injections have proven to weaken the tendon, so PRP and A2M are excellent alternatives. Lipogems and stem cell injections may postpone or possibly eliminate the need for surgery for arthritic and injured cartilage. depending on the severity of the condition, age and general health, and lifestyle of the patient.
Thank you for your interest in learning more about regenerative medicine and the revolution of stem cell therapy. Denver Regenerative Medicine began with a philosophy, a philosophy of staying true to the idea that the practice of medicine should first and foremost, do no harm. Today, advances in regenerative medicine allow us to take a person’s own stem cells, isolate them, concentrate them, and apply them directly to a damaged area of the body. Once there, those stem cells begin to create healthy, new tissue that is comprised completely of your own body’s material! No longer do patients have to undergo barbaric orthopedic surgeries and weeks of painful physical rehabilitation. In my view, this represents a paradigm shift in how medicine treats arthritis and injuries to the musculoskeletal system. Instead of drugs, surgeries, and artificial parts, we can now use the body’s own regenerative and restorative components and focus them on an injured area. The beauty of stem cell therapy is in its simplicity. It is my hope and expectation that we will be able to help thousands to avoid painful and unnecessary surgeries, as we remain on the forefront of the advancements in regenerative medicine.

ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR SURGERY
In the past, the only option for those who suffered an orthopedic injury to a joint was a surgical procedure to repair the damage. This meant going under the knife for several hours, a stay in the hospital for observation, and an extended recovery time. With regenerative therapy, the joint can be healed by using the body’s own resources, and the need for surgery can be eliminated. The stem cells can begin to rebuild the affected joint and the surrounding tissue, helping the patient recover faster and avoid an inpatient visit to the hospital.
ABOUT ORTHOPEDIC STEM CELL THERAPY
At the Colorado Spine Institute in Johnstown, we use stem cell therapy instead of and in addition to surgery to treat orthopedic injuries and conditions that are brought on by aging and joint degeneration in knees, hips, spine, shoulders, feet, ankles, and other joints. Our autologous stem cell treatment uses adult mesenchymal, multipotent stem cells taken from a patient’s own bone marrow. These cells are then injected back into the injured, damaged, or painful area.
Mesenchymal stem cells are those capable of regeneration – they take cues from surrounding cells of a specific type (bone, cartilage, or other connective tissue) and develop into that type of cell. They are typically found in bone marrow, and mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent, which means they can only develop into specific types of cells and not something completely different such as a brain cell or a kidney cell.
The function of adult stem cells is to serve as repair cells in the body. They lie dormant in areas of the body such as the bone marrow and “wake up” when they receive signals that the body has suffered some type of injury. These signals come from inflammation and the cells move to the inflamed site in the body, release proteins to regulate the inflammation, release other proteins to stimulate new cell growth, and then begin to change into the same type of cell that was damaged to promote healing.
Unfortunately, the number of stem cells in the human body begins to decline shortly after birth. This reduction in stem cells is the reason why our body shows more wear and deterioration as we get older – the fewer stem cells lead to less effective healing. Our goal in using stem cell therapy is to take cells from one part of a person’s body where they exist in higher concentrations, such as in the bone marrow in the iliac wing, and inject them into an injured joint to potentially help reinforce the healing power.
The stem cells we use may create healthy tissue to repair damaged tissue and potentially help the body heal itself. For example, these stem cells, when injected into an area with damaged bone, may develop into bone cells to aid the body in healing the damage. The goal of this minimally invasive procedure is to help patients heal faster and regain pain-free motion, while avoiding the need for surgery.
While orthopedic surgery remains the most effective treatment for some injuries, it can come with potential complications. With adult stem cell therapy, the goal is to help your body heal itself without using surgery. Stem cells exist naturally within the body with their function being to provide healing in the event of injury.
Autologous stem cell therapy is performed in our on-site procedure suite where an experienced orthopedic surgeon uses live X-ray to remove stem cells from a high-concentrated area (the iliac wing of the pelvis) and inject those regenerative cells into the injured or painful joint or area. The goal of this procedure is to boost your body’s healing process, increasing cellular communication and providing support cells to heal where the normal process would otherwise be unable to. This procedure takes approximately 45 minutes.

Regenerative medicine, including platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and stem cells, is emerging within the field of musculoskeletal medicine for the safe and effective treatment of spine and joint pain. PRF and stem cells, usually retrieved from the patient’s own body, offer patients more appropriately conservative and effective approaches to pain relief and tissue repair than traditional treatment options.
WHY CHOOSE US?
Dr. Martin will take time to discuss the diagnosis with each patient and make sure the patient better understands the pain generator. Creating a treatment plan is an individual and interactive process.
Our cutting-edge treatments have given patients an excellent non-surgical option to actually healing damaged tissue and avoid surgery. Dr. Martin has had groundbreaking success in using regenerative medicine products in the spine, joints and soft tissue.
STEM CELL THERAPY
Stem cell therapy is an exciting part of a rapidly growing area within medicine termed Regenerative Medicine. Stem cells are cells that have the opportunity to become several different tissue types and also have the ability to self-replicate. Stem cells are found throughout the body in certain tissues and in varying concentrations. Bone marrow and adipose tissue both have high concentrations of stem cells and are readily available within the body.
Bone Marrow Aspiration (BMA)
At Spine & Joint Solutions, a procedure called bone marrow aspiration is performed to collect stem cells for use in areas of injury. The procedure is performed at a surgical center so that sterile technique can be used, as well as x-ray guidance to ensure that the whole procedure is as safe as possible. The aspiration process typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes and begins with having a patient lie on a bed on his/her stomach. The iliac crest bone, or top ridge of the hip bone, is the location chosen from which to draw bone marrow out. The region is sterilized and then anesthetized to reduce any discomfort. A needle is then advanced into the iliac crest, and only of the amount of bone marrow product that is needed for treatment is aspirated from the region. The needle is then removed. Given that the bone marrow aspiration technique that is used by Dr. Martin is the most advanced on the market at this time and effectively concentrates the product during the aspiration process, no centrifuge duration of the bone marrow is necessary. This, in turn, shortens the overall procedure and causes less potential harm to the bone marrow product. The bone marrow aspiration (BMA) product is then ready to be injected into the desired area. If the target is the joints or soft tissue, then an ultrasound is used to help guide the needle directly into the region of damage. If the target is the spine, a fluoroscope (x-ray machine) is used to help guide the needle into the region of damage. When stem cells are placed in an area of degeneration or injury within the body, these cells have the ability to decrease local inflammation and heal damaged tissue.
Donor Stem Cells
There are certain situations in which using bone marrow-derived stem cells is not the best option. In these situations, further discussions about donor stem cells are reasonable and necessary. Any individual who is known to have a chronic illness, such as a rheumatologic condition, or a person who has been treated with chemotherapy or radiation, may not have extremely healthy stem cells, as your stem cells are only as healthy as you are. In addition, more recent literature has outlined that any individual over the age of 60 should consider using donor stem cells due to having a low concentration of stem cells within their own body.
Following a healthy, full-term delivery, the placenta, and umbilical cord may be collected. Stem cells are then collected from the Wharton’s jelly within the umbilical cord. The final stem cell product is then placed in a vial and stored at -196°. At the time of your treatment, the product is thawed within the vial, drawn into a syringe and placed into the target area under either ultrasound or fluoroscopy guidance.
Stem cell therapy is a safe and conservative treatment option for multiple musculoskeletal conditions, including joint degeneration, cartilage injury, tendon injury, ligament injury, facet joint injury and disc injury.
All regenerative medicine patients at Spine & Joint Solutions will receive a comprehensive approach to their treatment process. This will include a full consultation, during which all questions will be answered. A packet will be provided that includes information on what to expect before, during and after the procedure. This will include post-injection protocols and activity modifications, as well as what to expect from the rehabilitation process, which begins four weeks after the injection. An outline describing an anti-inflammatory diet suggested supplements, and recipes will also be included. Patients may be asked to wear a brace or use crutches to offload the joint or spine region that was treated.
Additionally, each patient who undergoes treatment with either PRF or stem cells will be asked to take part in the research that is being conducted at Spine & Joint Solutions. This will consist of filling out simple questionnaires before treatment and again at specific points following treatment. Repeat imaging may be pursued to ensure tissue healing.
