Dr. Lionel Bissoon; our medical director, has a background in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Hormone Replacement Therapy, Cosmetic Dermatology and specializes in Regenerative and Restorative Medicine.

The use of stem cell therapy for joint injuries has been proven in most cases to eliminate the need for invasive reconstructive surgery, pain medications and improve function for people with joint and cartilage injuries.
The human body naturally contains millions of adult stem cells which are found in our fat, bones and other tissues. Adult stem cells can be harvested either from the patient’s, fat or bone marrow through a quick and relatively pain-free procedure. The stem cells are collected and injected within 30-60 minutes of the harvest into the site of the injury. The process of harvesting fat stem cells and bone stem cells are both FDA approved.
Adult stem cells are highly regenerative and have the ability to restore and repair injured tissue and joints, therefore, eliminating the need for invasive surgical procedures. Thus, there is no need to suffer needlessly, undergo invasive surgery, and take long term pain medications and non-steroidal medications if you are a candidate for the autologous stem cell treatment.
Is This Legal?
Yes! Currently, the FDA does not allow for manipulation and growing of stem cells; basically it is illegal. However, it is legal to administer the stem cells from fat and bone on the day of harvest. Plastic and Orthopedic surgeons have been using fat and bone marrow injections for decades. In summary, if stem cells are to be harvested from a person for medical purposes, they must be replanted in that person the same day without any cultivation or expansion.

(SCS) is a privately owned, NYSDOH licensed comprehensive stem cell bank, registered with the FDA and approved for the procurement, processing, storage, and distribution of human hematopoietic (blood-forming) stem cells of bone marrow and peripheral blood origin. Stem cells collected and processed by us have been successfully used since 1993 for the engraftment of many patients with a diagnosis of cancer (Acute and Chronic Leukemia, Lymphomas, both Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s, Multiple Myeloma, Breast Cancer and other solid tumors) that were treated at several premier New York Hospitals.

SCS facility is located in midtown Manhattan with an available space of approx. 3000 sq. ft. comprising an apheresis suite for peripheral blood stem cell collections, a stem cell laboratory, medical offices and examination rooms properly equipped to allow bone marrow aspiration sampling.
The stem cell laboratory hosts the necessary equipment for the large scale processing of stem cells under sterile conditions, short and long term in-vitro culture of stem cells, liquid nitrogen storage as well as microscopy and PCR capabilities for research purposes.
SCS intends to continue its excellence in banking hematopoietic stem cells for the treatment of certain cancers and to establish itself as a facility dedicated to advance marrow-derived stromal stem cell research in preparation for clinical applications.
Therapeutic usage of hematopoietic stem cells:
Transplantation of bone marrow and/or peripheral blood stem cells is currently used in conjunction with high dose chemotherapy for the intended curative treatment of certain blood disorders that include: Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), Hodgkin’s Disease (HD), several types of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL) including Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) and Multiple Myeloma (MM).
Transplantation for solid tumors is now considered experimental.
When the patient’s own stem cells are used, the transplant is called autologous and when a relative’s or unrelated donor’s stem cells are used, the procedure is called allogeneic transplantation. The latter is associated also with an immune component called graft-versus host disease that may have possible benefits for disease control, but may also cause complications leading to increased morbidity and mortality.
Adequate quality of stem cells is of paramount importance and is measured in both cell number content and presence of CD34 positive cells administered per kilogram body weight, in addition with proof that there is no bacterial, fungal or viral contamination of collections. Stem cell donors undergo a rigorous screening process including a detailed confidential questionnaire and blood testing for a variety of diseases.
We maintain stem cell collections for clinical use in liquid nitrogen storage.
2. Therapeutic usage of marrow-derived mesenchymal (stromal) stem cells:
These procedures are not yet in the main stream of practice of medicine, but rapid developments indicate that soon they may become a clinical reality in the United States. As such, transplantation of mesenchymal (stromal) stem cells is performed only under closely monitored clinical trials with FDA approval. The reason for such monitoring is due to the fact that several weeks of in-vitro culture are necessary to procure an adequate number of mesenchymal (stromal) stem cells and demonstration of mesenchymal (stromal) cells’ ability to differentiate into other types of cells (like cartilage or bone-forming) is necessary.
Under clinical trials (performed so far mainly overseas) mesenchymal (stromal) stem cells were found to be successful for the treatment of cartilage and bone defects associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis as well as in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases like Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis or immune-related conditions like Graft-versus-Host Disease and Multiple Sclerosis.

The Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology was established in 2005 with a mission to be at the forefront of stem cell biology research. The goal is to conduct high caliber stem cell research that can ultimately lead to medical advances. We have over 40 faculty members, all of whom work on a variety of areas within stem cell biology. Members are affiliated with more than 20 different departments and institutions at the NYU Langone Medical Center, representative of the multidisciplinary nature of the center. The Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology faculty are internationally renowned and have received many honors and awards. Faculty include members of the National Academy of Sciences and Howard Hughes Medical Investigators.
Research at the center is focused on four broad areas, including (1) programming and reprogramming, lineage restriction and development, (2) tissue stem cells and disease, (3) regeneration and homeostasis, and (4) cancer and stem cells. The Stem Cell Biology training program in The Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences is designed to promote interdisciplinary studies within the field of stem cell biology for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. STEM CELL PROGRAM/REGENERATIVE REPAIR
Our Phase I clinical trial is the only clinical trial of its kind in the United States to test freshly harvested MSC-NP cells administered intrathecally in multiple dosing regimens. Results showed dosing was well tolerated with only minor adverse events, and 15 of 20 subjects demonstrated functional neurological improvement. To make MSC-NPs, autologous stem cells are taken from a patient’s own bone marrow. These are called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The MSCs expanded from the bone marrow are then manipulated in the laboratory to make them into neural progenitor cells, which are MSC-NPs. Our Phase II randomized placebo-controlled study will test the efficacy of intrathecal MSC-NP treatment in patients with progressive MS. This will be a double-blind study of 50 patients, all of whom will eventually receive treatment with MSC-NPs. Construction of the Tisch MS Center’s, Regenerative Medicine Laboratory began in the summer of 2017, and it is expected to open winter of 2018. Upon completion of the build-out, we plan to begin enrollment of our Phase II Study.
UNDERSTAND DISEASE PROGRESSION
A major focus of research at Tisch MS is to investigate the underlying causes of disease progression using novel approaches based on comparative analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Our emphasis is on identifying possible therapeutic targets for and novel biomarkers of disease activity in progressive MS patients. To accomplish this, we are studying changes in metabolism, the function of astrocytes, and the role of intrathecal delivery of methotrexate (IT-MTX) in this population. Additionally, we are developing a novel animal model to further understand the trajectory of progressive MS.
DISCOVER THE CAUSE OF MS
To discover the cause of MS, our researchers are looking into what B-cells in the immune system is attacking. We are attempting to answer questions such as if there is a particular protein in myelin that’s attacked? Is EBV involved in MS? Can we find the trigger of MS, if there is one? It is our hope that looking at MS B-cells and the antibodies they produce, will answer some of these questions and ultimately lead us to the cause of the disease.
TRANSLATE THE RESEARCH TO PATIENTS
Biomarkers are specific and sensitive assays that help in better diagnosis, assessment of disease activity, and measurement of treatment responses. Using CSF analysis, we can determine how active the disease is (Fetuin A level), how likely is it to progress (osteopontin), and the level of oxidative stress (lipid peroxidation levels). Together with single B-cell analysis, for even the most complex patient cases, we can rationally decide on which treatment is most likely to be effective and how potent or aggressive therapy is needed.
